The Tigers new stadium has taken another significant step forward with the number of potential architects now narrowed down to four from the 18 who originally made submissions. The remaining four are all successful firms who have extensive stadium experience and shown a genuine enthusiasm for this exciting project.
The Club will meet with all four at the beginning of December and plan to appoint the successful firm in the middle of December. Meanwhile each firm is now working on their concept designs which they will present at the meetings. This will be very timely as it will coincide with the opening of the visitors centre at Xscape and the concept designs from the appointed architects will be put on show for the fans to view and give feedback.
In the meantime, members of the stadium steering group will be visiting a number of recent UK stadium developments, over the next few weeks. This process will help the club prepare for the construction process.
Tigers CEO Richard Wright said: “As fans are aware outline planning consent has already been granted and the next step will be to seek a detailed planning consent. When we have determined which of the four architects will be chosen the successful firm will then prepare a detailed planning application with a view to submitting this to Wakefield Council around April next year. It should then take around 12 weeks for the planning authority to give consent so around the middle of next year we should be ready to start construction.
“Meanwhile it is vitally important for all fans, sponsors, the community and local councillors to get behind and fully support the scheme. The importance of a new stadium to enable the Tigers to secure a long term and successful future in Super League can’t be stressed too highly. In fact, many people in the area will say that the Tigers and the Clubs’ future in Super League is the single most important issue that the community face. Others will say that health, education and poverty are more important issues but we will deliver benefits and help to address those issues at the same time. We are in discussions with Pontefract and Wakefield Colleges and also the Primary Care Trust, and through an expanded community programme can make a difference to the well being of local people. The arrival of a new stadium and the proposed Surf World complex will see the number of visitors soar in the next few years bringing jobs and prosperity to the district. Castleford can become the biggest tourist attraction in the north of England.
Meetings with potential tenants within the stadium are ongoing with a number of organisations appreciating the benefits of leasing space at the stadium. A prestigious location with superb transport links and ample car parking as well as the connection with the Tigers are proving attractive features.
Richard continued “It is important that the fans get the chance to view the designs and give feedback, we only get one chance with the design. The visitors centre and architectural appointment give us the opportunity. We also want the fans to have the opportunity to help finance the scheme and are exploring the potential for local people to buy shares in the stadium as well as the ‘buy a brick’ scheme which has been done successfully at many other new stadium developments. We will announce details as soon as we are able.”
